Babysitting by the Book

Babysitting requires great responsibility. If needed, is your son or daughter capable of providing first aid to a child? Does he or she know how to properly change a diaper and feed an infant? The American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Course can teach them how.

Designed for 11- to 15-year olds, the fun, interactive course teaches first aid and safety skills so they can prevent and respond to emergencies.

Teens will learn how to:

* Perform first aid and get professional medical help fast
* Identify common safety hazards and prevent injuries
* Make good, responsible decisions
* Supervise infants through school-age children
* Choose safe and age-appropriate toys and games
* Perform basis care routines like diapering, feeding and dressing
* Prepare simple meals and snacks
* Handle bedtime issues
* Find and interview for babysitting jobs

Through the course, students develop skills in five main areas: leadership, safety and safe play, basic care, first aid, and professionalism.

Babysitter’s Training has been reviewed and supported by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., Boy Scouts of America, YMCA of the U.S.A., Boys and Girls Clubs, JCC Association and 4-H.
